Barcelona has taken the lead on using technology for efficiency and sustainability.

Bus routes are adaptable for maximum efficiency, rubbish pick-up is aided by the presence of sensors, and the operation of streetlights has been overhauled.

Anthony Flint explains that while Barcelona is forging ahead, there still isn’t a common language or science of cities for the 21st century.
